2016 JRBF – Getting ready Friday afternoon – Amherst Boat Ramp

Clifton Lee, Lynchburg Launch
The 2016 James River Batteau Festival is about to begin. Friday, June 17th, at the Amherst boat ramp activity around the batteaux parked there was getting busy. The Clifton Lee was being launched into the river, but not before Captain Lisa was seen putting some oakum near the area on an end where she famously hit a rock at 7 islands last year! Gail Timberlake, The President of the VC&NS was at the rivers edge discussing the batteaux with several young school girls. The Ladies Slipper crew has borrowed the batteau Margaret Stevens from their friends in Powhatan. The boat will carry the name plate of the Ladies Slipper and will be crewed by the famous ladies from many batteaux in the past as the crew keeps going like the…

30th Annual James River Batteau Festival off to a great start from Percival’s Island in Lynchburg:

Batteau, Lynchburg Launch
The weather was beautiful as I made my way down to the beach on Percival's Island. The Rose of Nelson  and a couple of other batteaux were already at the island at 9:30. I placed a stick in the sand at the water line so I could see how much the river was rising from the expected water release from Rusen's Dam. Gradually the boats gathered along the beach and the crowd on the bank did also! Everyone was really excited. I gave the VC&NS President, Mrs. Gail Timberlake, some batteau mail which was a brand new James River Batteau Festival Trail Atlas - 30th Annual Edition with a Pink Cover (The ONLY one with a pink cover). Gail stood on the batteau Lady's Slipper very proud of her new…

28th Annual James River Batteau Festival off to a good start in Lynchburg!

Batteau, Lynchburg Launch
[nggallery id=27] The 28th annual James River Batteau Festival started from Lyncburg's Percival's Island this morning. Announcer Jeff Taylor called the batteaux names out loud and told a little about each boat to the many spectators that lined the banks. A band of musicians played from the deck of one of the batteau for a while before the launch and they were very good! The music added a lot of nice atmosphere. It was so good to see many batteau friends again today. Mr. Buddy High and his wife Jean were back once more. Buddy is a past President of the VC&NS and a past Chairman of the JRBF. The weather was perfect, the water was a good level and getting that green color back from the brown the past…
